The 40×40 cm paving slab belongs to the mid-size formats and comes in several thicknesses. Made of concrete to UNE-EN 1339, the 40×40 slab in 4 or 5 cm thickness works very well for garden paths and footpaths designed for pedestrian traffic. With a textured finish it provides a safe, slip-resistant walking surface — no small detail once the autumn rains arrive.
Where is it ideal?
- Garden paths and footpaths: the mid-size format is easy to handle yet creates a calm, orderly surface.
- Steps: with a textured finish, a safe tread surface.
- Patio and seating area: a clean-lined, easy-care surface.
- Stepping stones in the lawn: with wide, grassed joints, a modern, natural-looking path.
Load capacity
At 4–5 cm thick, the 40×40 slab is meant for pedestrian use. For vehicle traffic, the thicker (60 mm), smaller-format paving block is the right choice, because it distributes wheel loads better. The larger slab copes less well with point loads and can crack under a car.
Laying
With larger units it is especially important to lay them on a perfectly flat, well-compacted bedding, because the format magnifies every unevenness. They look equally good with continuous joints, in a staggered bond, or stepping-stone style with grassed joints.
The 40×40 slab is, in short, a practical, versatile choice for pedestrian surfaces — safe in a textured finish, and giving the garden a modern, clean-lined look.
